Opening Night Keynote - How Plant-Based Protein Products Provide a Bright Opportunity for Canada
Main Stage - Exhibition Hall E
In February of 2018, the Federal Government announced the recipients of the Innovation Supercluster Initiative funding, a $950 M five-year program. Protein Industries Canada, an industry-led, agriculture and food-focused bid was chosen as one of five Superclusters across Canada. Since that time, there has been a lot of talk around clusters and superclusters, innovation and ecosystems. What does this mean for farmers producing plant-based protein products?

Bill Greuel, the CEO of Protein Industries Canada, will break down these terms, talk about the reasons behind this investment, the opportunity for Canada's farmers and agricultural sector and what Protein Industries Canada aims to do.

      Water Drives Everything...EVERYTHING  (A - G201/2 Session 1 A)
      GLEN 201/2
Water the #1 driver of crop production – too much, too little or just right – yet we give it little more attention than a brief check of the rain gauge. Elston will show you how to get a better idea of the water you have to work with and what that means as far as determining yield potentials and subsequent crop management plans. Ray will tag in and help us understand what water has to do with choosing the best nitrogen sources for the situation. This tag-team duo will make you question your current yield goals and the risk-reward of a better understanding of the #1 driver of everything.

Ag In Motion - A Proving Ground for High Yield Agronomy - 10 Agronomic Best Practices We Learned  (OFS - G205 - 2)
      GLEN 205
1 Show, 2 Times the Yield, 3 Crops over 3 years - Currently, the Canadian average yield for peas, canola and wheat is less than 50% when compared to some other countries and is not even close to the maximum genetic yield potential of a crop. Over the last three years, ATP Nutrition decided to challenge the status quo and push these three crops to twice the Canadian average yield at their Ag in Motion demonstration plots in Saskatchewan. For these demonstrations, every part of the crop management program was reviewed with a yield being targeted that was twice the Canadian average. One of the main focuses was the correct and proactive nutrition of the crop using both a robust soil program, based on thorough soil sampling, and enhanced with a “little and often” foliar program based of a novel tissue testing protocols. Dan will demonstrate how new technologies, such as the Nutri-Scan, can provide real time soil health analytics improving the decision making around crop nutrition. Come learn the top 10 agronomic best practices, as to how proper plant nutrition can bring your crop closer to it’s genetic yield potential!

Soil Matters. Farming as If the Future of Civilization Depends upon It.  (SHF - G203/4 - 2)
      GLEN 203/4
Through history, as soil was degraded, people moved on to “new frontiers”. Today, we have a rapidly growing population in a world where most of the highly productive land is already being used – and abused. The “last frontier” is intensive, scientifically-sound and responsible soil management. That management begins with a clear vision of the strengths and weaknesses of our agri-food eco system. We can address these weaknesses with new tools and technology not available to previous peoples. The future is full of opportunities for improving our soils while the fate of future generations depends upon our choices.

FutureCast Panel - AUTONOMOUS MACHINERY - From the Mine to the Field and Beyond
Main Stage - Exhibition Hall E
The Autonomous Machinery FutureCast Panel discussion will explore the mining industry, which is considered to be a decade ahead of agriculture in the adoption of autonomous technology. The adoption of this technology in mining has increased operating efficiencies, lowered labor requirements, and reduced injuries on the job.

In agriculture, a shrinking labor pool and increasing weather variability demands more work out of fewer human resources. It is more important than ever to consider who will plant, care for, and harvest the crop, and how the work will be done as operations grow larger and workers with the necessary skills are harder to find. Technology can help.

Ed White, a seasoned award-winning journalist and markets analyst with the Western Producer, will moderate.

During this discussion, experts will share the progress made to date in the mining industry and compare and contrast with the agriculture. Then the panel will look to the future to discuss why autonomous machinery will be coming soon to a farm near you.
